  1. unknown mob member with a messed said

I would like to please notify you that my identity has been comprimised, I am therefore about to terminate my connection to any one relating to or thinking about relating to a mob, so if the reader of this article has any ideas about tracking my whereabouts, don’t bother, since it will be pointless, rather call me, and I will give you directions. but I warn you that I’m heavily armed with the latest in High Powerder Weaponry, connected to very life like humonoids that have the latest in artificial-AI. And as much as I would love to go into detail on how they love to dismantal organic objects, I shall leave it to you capable imagination. be warned, this message is not being tracked and will not explode… hmmm… nope, not possible.

  2. The real Charles Philip said

Very Funny! :) – I have done a search on google for my name a couple of times, to see if I would be ranked anywhere in google, but I get too many results around 16 000 results, and even if I try exclude a few popular finds like "The Prince of Wales (Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten …" I still get left with thousands of people claiming to be the real me… hehe, you know what, I think maybe I should just admit that my name is not really "Charles Philip" but a member of a secret mob, that I have no connection with… hmmm… LOL, ok I’m stopping now before I say something really stupid. I wonder if someone who is searching for the real "Charles Philip" will link to this blog… hmm, intereseting thought. My full name is: "Charles John Fairbairn Philip" I like to find someone with the same second and third name… hehe.

  3. Charlie said

Hmm… let me add my comments:

First of all let me start off by saying that there is just too much you can do… I mean I remember being at home when I was like 5 and constantly saying "Mom, I’m bored" and haveing all the time in the world to be inventive and make up stories of how aliens have invaded the planet and we have to select a special weapon from the "TOY BOX" to defend ourselves… we would then rely on my brother to tell us about this threat and make sure we understood all the rules. Fun!

And even through school I found I also had plenty of time to do things, I mean homework could always be regarded as a "BAD THING" so it was put aside, and I didn’t really put too much importance on being a team player and stand in the sun all day while I wait for my chance to hit a ball with a stick… and when that chance cam I always seem to find that stick a little too thin and the stupid ball preffered hitting the 3 stationary sticks behind me… and so my interests moved to computers which in themselves are a world of "THINGS TO DO".

So as soon as you leave school, and finish your studies or whatever, you begin working, and guess what you find out: You spend, roughly, 8 Hours sleeping, 8 Hours working, and 1 Hour Driving each day… actually, most people only have the evenings in their lives to do anything, like from 6 until 11, if you lucky. I really think we can’t do without sleep, so my answer to this problem is that we need to have less working hours, I mean I think everyone should work on a commision type scheme, and those who want lots of money and want to get high positions or something can work as much as they want, and those who want to live a better life can just work enough to make a living, problem is the amount of work you have to do just to live… that’s a problem about living in a big city I guess. Anyway, I’m no really wasting time… so I’m stopping… hehe

Yay, my name has finally been indexed in google… "Charles John Fairbairn Philip" officially returns 1 result, well hopefully soon to be more. anyways, check out my blog if you are interested: http://www.digitaltinder.com/charlie

I would just like to set the record straight and let everyone know that I do not overate myself when it comes to developing :) – hehe, jokes, I know I was just used as an example in your plans to take over the world <evil laugh>HA HA HA</evil laugh>, but as long as you say something good about me in your next blog, I’m happy. – I have to run now, but I will comment on this topic tomorrow, since I always have a lot to say about everything… except developing tools of course, everyone knows I’m overated ;P

  6. Charlie said

Woop, I take back what I said in my previous comment, since I didn’t read your post thoroughly enough, you are actually quite acurate in the fact that I would overate people’s developing skills. but still, I don’t mind if you say something good about me in your next blog just for the hell of it.

I guess with this whole rating thing you wouldn’t really know who rated what for who, I mean I guess whoever is administrating would know. Because otherwise if I knew you thought I overate people, I would then just compensate and rate them higher, because naturally I would think my rating is accurate.

It is an exellant idea Paul, I must admit, who did you steal it from? hehe ;P

That’s cool, I saw this gallery earlier, but you hadn’t put any pics in it yet, I noticed that you put like all the pics from Ian’s Party in it :) – Don’t you think that’s a bit much.. hehe.. anyways, I would like to get this gallery tool from you sometime, not now, but when I start taking millions of pictures again, and that will only be when I get my own digital camara… anyways…

  8. Charlie said

Hi Paul, I noticed a small bug in the gallery, if you go into Ian’s Party gallery, and then click on a picture it gives an error because of the apostrophe in "Ian’s", well I think that’s the reason, since if I remove the apostrophe in the address then it is fine.

  9. Paul said

Hrm… I finally tested it out, and it seems to work fine. I’m not sure what error you got this morning, but I don’t get it if I go there now.

Wanna try again? And let me know if its still not working?

  10. Charlie said

WOW, that’s exciting news, must be so weird to know that you are both going to be living together as husband and wife in a bran new house… (does it have a white picked fence ;p) – I can’t imagine the day when that will be me. But I still look forward to it. I’m sure things must be so hectic for you at the moment, but at the same time, it must be so exciting!!! You have to have a BIG house warming, and I will bring my camra :D

Is this link right? – I just see a bunch of xml

  12. Charlie said

LOL – HAHAHA HEHE HA HE HA… VERY FUNNY :)

    - No Serious, that is SOOOO funny (not being sarcastic!)

  13. Charlie said

:) – It all depends on how long it will take to calculate the child items in each branch, and also how many levels there are. I like the idea of the top most layer showing the total amount and then work your way down, but it would not be very standard then, each number representing a different amount of layers, hmm… If you could perhaps either put both, or have the ability to set how you would like to view the tree. I guess it would also determine on which number you would need, what is more usefull in that situation. LOL… I started writing this thinking that I would choose one, but now I’m undecided.

  14. Paul said

Yup, its right… I just did a "right click | Open in New window", and it worked fine… Most of MS’s site is XML driven. That way they can XSLT it into many different funky formats. And I guess it’s made easier because SQL 2000 can output the results of select statements as XML… (And Yukon will do even more)

Anyway, it works ok for me… If anyone else reads this, did you have a problem with the link?

Being the DDR fan I am, it should say something I haven’t bought the Xbox DDR even though I have an Xbox! Yikes. (hint: its because it plays and looks like a downgrade and the announcers are horrrrrrrrible)

I’m always playing DDR Extreme (Jap) or DDR Party Mix (Jap) on my PS2 these days. If you love DDR (and other music games), PS2 is by far the better investment [especially if you can import]

I’m not sure what to say about playing imports on a PAL PS2, but I use a flip-lid and swap disk with my NTSC US PS2 to play NTSC JAP PS2 discs, avoiding the modchip route.

I have downloaded the tool, it’s quite amazing, because I couldn’t find any tools that would be of use, but I was probably not looking hard enough. I’m not going to use it for the current app that I’m converting because it doesn’t actually have that much php code in it, and to avoid any possible mess, I’m just coping and pasting bits at a time, and converting included pages into user controls.

    Hmm…

I just opened sharp reader and noticed that I hadn’t actually read this highs and lows blog yet… :) – I love the way you get carried away on little randomly "sequenced" ideas that aren’t quite bunched up but arrive in an order that can be described as a sequence as much as it can be said to be randomly created.

Oh yes, I have two really cool tools to help with the offending word problem you were having, the program is called wordweb, I have the instal, but it would be quicker for you to download it, do a search in google for WordWeb, it is a mini dictionary, and it works extremly well, my brother, Mat, and I use it. It gives quick access to definitions and similar words… nouns, verbs and any other english language jargon.

That is officially my comment of the day :)

  29. Charlie said

This has been the first time ever that I had to speed read through your blog :) – you must have had a lot of time on your hands to write this blog :) – or the lack of service and quality that these photolabs have delivered to you is really getting to you.. hehe. I must say that I have had some really good results from digital photo’s well I don’t have much experience in normal photography, since I’m too young! :P but from what I’ve seen, the photos we get from Photo First is usually excellant especially when we tel them not to "correct" the colour balance… I think for someone to correct colour they need to be really good at it, I mean I totally suck at it. When I see a picture that has bad colour balance I don’t know the difference, except for when my brother, being the colour professional he is, fixes an image, and I’m like "wow… now I see that the colour was bad" there is a lot that goes into balancing colours… just watching my brother zoom around photoshop and looking at graphs of rgb cmyk and so forth confuse me.

The more things change the more they stay the same! I’ve been running into this:

    * the original web hosting provider had registered the domain but not paid for it

    * the registrar was not prepared to transfer it until it was paid for

    * the client was getting e-mails from the registrar about the transfer requests and was starting to e-mail the registrar directly (not understanding any of the technical considerations, and getting very confused by the replies from the registrar)

    since 1996.

How do you handle client lock in concerns?

  47. Paul said

"Lock in concerns? What lock in concerns?" :D

But seriously, can you give me an example of a lock in?

As I said in a previous blog, I kinda started the hosting business "by mistake" a few weeks ago. So I don’t have massive experience of this in my own business.

I kinda managed web hosting at an ISP a while ago, but I didn’t create the contracts, I had virtually no control over what was in them, and the sales people generally did what they wanted and the MD would alter contracts to suite them (leaving the rest of us to deal with the ensuing problems)

I’m actually trying to do something similar, and you’re 100% right. A better way, I found is to set yourself up as a kind of home base, and leave your details in the right areas (forums, blogs etc) and then just let people mail you. I also sent a spamy-kinda thing around, explaining what I was trying to do, and asking people to mail me directly if they agreed, instead of adding their name and forwarding it.

Then I just collect and sort the replies.

    It’s working quite well, actually.

Rich…! – I’m still using them coz their API was simple to use… Click-a-Tell’s one is not too easy, but I’ve pretty much finished setting it up (Just waiting for Click-a-Tell to sort out my username on their site… It got "expired" because I haven’t used it in a year, and they keep "un-expiring" it but I still can’t log in – I hope their customer service improves otherwise I’m gonna be looking for yet another SMS provider…)

    Anonymous – Two reasons why I don’t use SMSPop…

    1) Their app doesn’t allow grouping of contacts..

    2) They don’t provide any API for me to use to write my own program for sending the messages (so I can build the "grouping" functionality)…

Firstly, Hell T F yeah on the starbucks thing – if only for the wifi and the strawberries and cream/coffee smoothie thingymabob, it rocks.

With regards the beggars, it’s a catch 22, by supporting one real beggar, your perpetuating the act of begging with another faker. I have taken to only supporting the guys who sell homeless talk (hmmm, I see a related post brewing), at least there you are helping people that are helping themselves. At the end of every month, I usually have three copies sitting in my back seat unread. But hey, what’s R15? As far as I’m concerned, with the odd exception, beggars deserve nothing. There is a guy on our corner near northgate that stands begging, he’s a young fit guy of about 20 – why in the world does he think i’d help him?

Sad news is, it’s an epidemic and requires a near zero-tolerance approach…!

It’s difficult to see from your code snippet, where the data comes from. You are not going to be able to do the comparisons for value types "generically" without doing the cast. If the types are known at compile time, I would suggest possibly creating a whole bunch of overloads of the method, with the object-object comparison as a last resort.

New Solutions – perhaps the worst service based solutions company in South Africa. Where do you hear of solution providers telling you what is best for your organisation. Besides, they have a narrowly focussed approach where they and are not open minded. They drive only their personal gain solutions and expect it to be accepted. They are not receptive to other comments and solutions in other words whatever they expect everyone to accept whatever they mandate or suggest and get aggressive when other alternatives are suggested.

These guys suck. They are clearly not what the IT community needs, and I am surprised that Kim Midgley is an MVP!!!!!!!! They need to learn people skills to be able ti survive in a South Africa where preferential procurement is the name of the game.

Made me think of land mines. I’ll explain (choke, clear throat) After reading Johnny Walker’s (founder of Autodesk) treatise on using small robots to clear landmines (sorry I can’t find the link) because rabbits just didn’t weigh enough to set them off, I thought that probably genetic engineering or selective breading could resolve the light bunny problem. Due to bunny’s reproductive behavior landmine damage to the bunny population would be no concern, and the various scavenger fauna would have plenty to eat and so on..

Now if I owned a bunny farm I would hire the Bunny Animators to produce a intra-corporate presentation to convince stockholders to invest in this previously untapped opportunity to do good in the world. That’s what I would do.

    Hi,

Yeah… I see the potential problem… All I said was "aparently the other Paul hadn’t put the money into Sean’s account yet"… I didn’t state that the other Paul didn’t put the money in the account. I just said that Sean didn’t bother to resolve the issue. I have no issues with Paul, and judging by Sean’s reactions to the entire situation I doubt he even made the mistake he claimed (i.e. I doubt he ever paid the money into the other Paul’s account – but that’s just speculation)

As it turns out, Sean started to deny that I’d ever worked for him (odd since I happen to have it confirmed by one of his current employees, and I somehow have the source code and databases for all the sites I claim to have worked on)

Anyway… Thanks for the advice… I’ll update the page to remove the other Paul’s surname so that people don’t get the wrong idea about him…

I would look at adding something to the footer like. If no objection to this is recieved then this is taken as factual.

You get downgraded to a max of 64kbit/sec after the 3GB, and apparently you can buy another account for an extra Rxxx.xx

That’s the story I heard in December when I watch a demo of the tech…

  115. Paul Sainsbury said

Yeah, 3GB is small, but then compared to what’s on offer, its faster than Telkom’s fastest connection, has the same cap as them, has faster access after the cap than telkom, and costs less. Compared to Sentech, its faster and cheaper than their fastest option, but its capped whereas theirs is not. I don’t mind the cap, as long as I have good speed until the cap. I guess I’ll just have to wean myself off the massive downloads once the cap’s in place. So far its just been a few .Net Shows, some DotNetRocks shows, and audio streaming. I’m pretty sure I’d have hit my cap already if it was in place, but then I won’t usually download 6 .Net shows in a month (they only do a new one about every 1.5 months) and there are only 4 DotNetRocks episodes in a month, so I guess I’ll be ok. ;-)

And with their pop3 access, and the fact that you can leave the mail on their server for backup purposes, it’s lovely to use…

With some clever filtering on your and gmail’s side, you could filter your work mail through gmail too. :-) I don’t do that though, Thunderbird’s never lost my Inbox. Must be because I don’t run it on Windows? ;)

I guess I could setup a gmail account for each address, forward all my mails to the right addresses, and then just download each account via pop3 using the corresponding gmail account.

That way I could leave stuff on the server indefinately, so I’d have web access, pop3 access and spam filtering all in one. Ok, so I think I’m gonna try set it up. If I get it working I’ll post an entry about it…

In my first term, I’d worked out that any religious teaching that couldn’t stand on it’s own merits, that needed such barbaric and unsubtle enforcement had to be deeply suspect.

I had a fascinating time testing the place’s "religious ethic", particularly with my refusal to be confirmed.

I left the place a firm atheist, absolutely poisoned against religion, and it took a while before I got willing to look at the field with an open mind.

As irony, or perhaps kharma would have it, I’m now sincerely religious, and I wonder if St Andrew’s would be proud of an old boy that now teaches Tantra, Sacred Sexuality!

I was using Thunderbird 0.8 on Windows XP Professional. I receive many emails from Japan with malicious attachments. Thunderbird is good automatically detecting the Junk. I NEVER open the attachments.

I was running Symantec Anti-virus with auto-protect and email scan. Starting one month ago, my Inbox file became 0bytes long during the download of the messages from the server. I found the file was not quarantined by Symantec AV. I disabled Symantec, and soon the Inbox disappeared again and third time.

I stopped using Thunderbird for a while. Today, I uninstalled the old Thunderbird and erased the Profile in my Application Settings. I installed Thunderbird 1.5 Beta 1, created a new account and downloaded my mail. After creating some filters I started marking some messages as Junk. Note: The Anti-Virus program is not running! After I marked a certain email as Junk, my Inbox became 0bytes long.

WARNING! It seems an attachment is erasing my Inbox without execution!

If you have any experience with this sort of problem, or can recommend a more secure Email program, please respond.

I would love to continue to use Thunderbird, but it may be too dangerous.

    Thanks,

    Hey Paul

I have a few comments. I originally bought an HTC Dream from MTN but ended up returning as i had a requirement to sync to exchnage. the sales folk told me that that this is done by downloading or buying an application from the market. unfortunatley they don’t tell you that the android market is not availale in SA and the Leaf equivalent (OpenMarket) was barely operational.

fortunately i got a refund and usede the money to by a HTC Magic which has some limited activesync ability.

While i have seen some progress on the open market in the last week, it is still a far cry from where the Androind market is and the ability to buy and download these applications is key in the purchase decision.

imgine buying an iphone with no access to Itunes store, its a little more than an ipod.

Hopefully we get up to speed on the applications and in particular the one i want is google SkyMap (one of my reasons for buying android).

    anyway, lets see it improve

  169. admin said

I’ve sent off some enquiries to Google South Africa to see if they have any information. I 100% agree on your analogy – it’s exactly like the iPhone without the App Store. With Apple you get the good and the bad sides – Good – only one store is allowed, so that means it must be available everyon. Bad – Apple can be as picky/anti-competitive as they like about what apps they allow to be sold. Android is the opposite – any store is ok which it means that there’s no single store that has all the apps, BUT at least anyone can write any app for it, so you can get Podcast downloaders, or alternative music players, or any number of other applications that Apple would usually reject.
